The authors take the context of the classroom seriously, not only because of its effects on teachers and pupils, but because classrooms are notorious as contexts which change little.

The instruments consist of two questionnaires, pre- and posttest, and video recordings the lesson. Analysis shows that pre-service teachers rely heavily on the explanations given by their teacher trainer. Causal relations remain unclear to them and the importance of problem solving skills is not sufficiently valued.
These teachers lack good approaches to science and this influences their ability to deal with science and technology problems. For the future teachers, to be better prepared for the science and technology classes, the pre-service teacher education needs to give more time and attention to providing proper explanations.
